Pregnancy Care Q & A

What is prenatal care?

Prenatal care refers to the medical care you receive when you’re pregnant. Dr. Chan provides care for many women throughout pregnancy, labor, and delivery.

Pregnancy is a special time during which your body changes dramatically. Prenatal care is an important way to keep you and your developing baby healthy throughout this time.

If you know you want to get pregnant, it’s a good idea to start seeing Dr. Chan even before you conceive. He helps you prepare your body for a healthy and successful pregnancy and answers any questions you may have.

What happens during prenatal visits?

At your first prenatal appointment, Dr. Chan thoroughly reviews your medical history and family’s health history to check for risk factors for pregnancy complications. He also performs a comprehensive physical exam, including a pelvic exam and Pap test, and spends time answering your questions about what to expect from pregnancy.

Additionally, Dr. Chan may estimate your due date based on the date of your last menstrual period at your first prenatal visit.

As your pregnancy progresses, prenatal visits may be shorter and less in-depth. Most prenatal appointments involve the following:

  • Checking your blood pressure
  • Measuring weight gain
  • Checking your baby’s heart rate

Dr. Chan also takes routine tests, such as an ultrasound, to monitor your baby’s development. If you have risk factors for pregnancy complications, such as high blood pressure, Dr. Chan may recommend additional tests.

Later prenatal visits may focus on preparing you for labor and delivery. Dr. Chan may discuss options for childbirth, such as Cesarean section or vaginal delivery.

How often should I see my OB/GYN during pregnancy?

When you have your first prenatal visit with Dr. Chan, he provides you with a schedule of appointments you need during pregnancy. Most normal pregnancies follow the following schedule:

  • Once per month for weeks 4-28
  • Twice per month for weeks 28-36
  • Once per week for weeks 36-birth

If you’re over age 35 or have a high-risk pregnancy, Dr. Chan may want to see you more frequently.
